I have always had a hard time keeping my facts straight about Delhi's history (not that I cared much about it for the longest time). The different Sultanate dynasties were always a jumble in my head, even when I was studying it in school in the 90s. And then there's the lack of information on the period preceding the Sultanate - the whole question of what is fact and what is legend or fiction begins to pop up. Anyway, to help me maintain sanity, I tried to create this timeline which helped in clearing up the mess. It lists the century, ruling dynasty and centre of power within the city for each of the different groups of people that have shaped the course of Delhi's history.
So there's a quick guide to the ebb and flow of power in Delhi. Of course, there are some nuances that aren't captured here (like the periods when Delhi ceased to be a capital, and other more obscure details about power struggles and absence of leadership). However, this should make it easier to place the sites visited in this blog in time.
